If there's nothing to be done about the 10 minutes between rounds, maybe there are way to make the waits more productive? Maybe introduce some simple exercises they can do while they wait? That will probably help kids keep their focus better, too. Is there anything that can streamline this process? I can't imagine having to wait that long when everyone is shooting short distances! Sort them into groups of kids that need to focus on the same thing and you can teach quite efficiently. Might need to do one session of mainly observing so you can set up clear goals for the next one. Of course, kids don't always know what they need to work on, so you and the other coaches would have to observe them first. Since you're not shooting yourself, you can check up on individual students while they're training. Of course, that's hard to copy when you've got 5-8 kids to teach, but the basic structure could be similar: start with a short lesson and then let them shoot. Next session, they might want to work on the same thing or something else or learn to use some new equipment. Later on, I'll check in and see how they're doing and watch some more shots and give advice where needed. I help them set up their equipment if needed, I watch them shoot 3-9 arrows, give them some pointers and then we both go back to shooting. The structure of our sessions is basically like this: newcomer has some idea of what they want to work on this session. They usually get one 'instructor' (really just an experience archer who like to help out) each. Our club is very small and if two or three people need teaching at the same time, that's a lot. How do you all do practices? Is my idea a good one? Do you have a better way? Any tips are appreciated!ĭisclaimer: not a certified coach of any sort, just someone who does a bit of teaching (at the archery club, but I have some experience standing in front of classrooms as well). I'd like to make sure I have the best plan ready to go before suggesting it to the others. I've been around all the coaches a lot, but I don't know if they'll be receptive to something like this. I mentioned my idea to one of the other coaches and he's on board, but he's not really the main guy. I usually just watch my daughter and her buddy, and then one other girl who I noticed struggling. As it stands now, I don't even know which kids are the new shooters and there are 3-4 of us coaching 20 shooters at once. These kids could get a ton of reps and direct coaching. They could put 10 down range while having a coach's individual attention, then go look at the groups or trends, arrow angle, etc and see how that correlates to mistakes in form during the shots. I don't recall anyone saying in my course if there's a set way to run a practice, but we usually have 20-25 per session and I had the idea to bring them up 5 at a time just to shoot. But if I pick out a kid to help, if they need something corrected they're lucky if they have 3 arrows left in the quiver to shoot and practice the change we made, etc. shots are at 10 and 15 meters, and sometimes 7 meters. These kids put about 30 down range over a 2 hour practice. During the shooting portion the coaches stand behind the line and help with form, technique, etc.Īll of this seems great, but I feel like the archers would improve faster with more arrow time. And in between there are safety tips and things. We have a line of archers, do the whistles, fire shots, return bows, get arrows, etc. So I've attended several of our practice sessions, and basically they're run exactly like a shoot. I've been helping my daughter at home since last year's season and figured I could be of some use to the other kids. I recently got my coaching cert for NASP.
